Slow start, fast finish for Jays in win

By: Chris Evans

The Harrah Panthers gave the Guthrie BlueJays all they wanted for the game's first 22-minutes before the Jays begun to separate themselves on the scoreboard for their 20th straight win with a 49-7 win.

Guthrie improves to 6-0 and 3-0 in district 5A-2 and will play Carl Albert next Thursday evening. Meanwhile, Harrah falls to 2-4 and 1-2.

After the first quarter the quiet Jelsma Stadium saw the Jays and Panthers tied at 7-all, but then Guthrie found the end zone three more times, in the last 5:53 of the first half, to go up 28-7 .

In the first half, Guthrie could only manage 31-yards rushing, but still passed for 157-yards. However, Harrah did what a lot of teams were not able to do this season and that is sustain drives and have the Jays defense on their heels.

The Panthers biggest play of the night came 9:14 into the game when senior Cameron Cornish took a carry up the middle of the Jays secondary and scored from 53-yards out to tie the game.

The BlueJays got on the board first with a 1-yard run by Josh King.

Guthrie got the lead back and for good on a 61-yard touchdown by senior Laron Parker, midway through the second quarter, from senior QB Keaton Callins.

King, who finished with 42-yards on 9-carries, got his second score from 2-yards out and Jays had a 21-7 lead.

Perhaps, the biggest play of the game with less then a minute left in the first half Harrah instead of running the ball to get into the locker room they attempted a pass. The pass instead found senior Skyler Smith and three plays later the Jays were back in the end zone.

Callins found sophomore Kentrell Brothers for a 10-yard touchdown with :50 left in the half to go into the locker room by three touchdowns.

Callins finished the night with 262-yards on 15 of 22 passing with 3-passing scores and was picked off one time.

Guthrie got back on the board in the third quarter when senior Donte' Foster caught his eighth touchdown this season. This one coming from 10-yards out to push the Jays lead to 35-7 with 9:44 to play in the third frame.

Brothers got the most unusual score of the evening when he went for the sack, but instead came away with the football by taking it away from the Panther quarterback for a 25-yard touchdown. The play is ruled as a fumble and the Jays had sealed the deal. Brothers was named the Huddle House Player of the Game with 4-catches and 2-sacks.

Senior JP Bruner got the final score with 8:34 left in the game with a 2-yard run and was the fifth BlueJay to score.

The Jays finished the night with  just 89-yards rushing while Harrah finished with 131-yards despite 53 of those coming on one play. Another sore spot for the Jays was 13 penalties for 90-yards.
