BlueJays end Deer Creek's season

By: Chris Evans

In the biggest match-up ever between Guthrie and Deer Creek in the newly found rivalry game failed to live up the hype in the first round of the Oklahoma High School Play-offs.

Guthrie took advantage of a blocked punt and put the game away early in the first quarter on their way to a 35-0 win over the Antlers. The Jays now travel to Booker T. Washington, next Saturday night, for a second round match-up that features No.1 vs No. 3.

Top ranked Booker T. defeated Ada 46-14 and improved their record to 10-1 and have won 8-games in a row. Guthrie also improves their season record to 10-1 and for the 2008 Guthrie seniors they tie the 2007 Guthrie seniors with the most wins as a class with 33-wins.

The 33rd win was secured at the 4:54 mark in the first quarter against the Antlers. That is when senior quarterback Keaton Callins found his good friend and fellow senior teammate in Donte' Foster for a 13-yard touchdown on the Jays second possession of the night. The touchdown was Foster's 13th receiving score and 15th for the season. Foster had 4-catches for 97-yards at halftime.

Guthrie held Deer Creek on downs for the second straight possession, but the Jays would start their next drive on the Antlers 18-yard line thanks to a block punt by senior Skyler Smith and recovered by senior Josh King. Then on the fourth play of the drive, Callins connected for his second TD in less then 3:00. This time by finding sophomore Kentrell Brothers for a 13-yard score. Callins has found Brothers now 6 times in the end zone this season.

Brothers finished the game as the Huddle House Player of the Game and marks his second time to win the award. Senior Alfred Ratcliff was awarded the Tyler Nichols Heart of a Champion Award. The "Flying Squirrel" has been a staple on the Jays special teams.

The Jays defense would be havoc all night for Deer Creek. In fact, DC could only manage 16-yards of offense in the first half that included minus 5-yards rushing. Deer Creek finished the game with 16 rushing yards.

Senior and four year starter, at quarterback, Dax Dilbeck was held in check the entire game and for the majority of the time had 3-4-5 Jays bringing him down on each carry. Dilbeck entered the game with 1407-rushing yards on the year.

Guthrie liked they did in the first quarter found the end zone twice in the second quarter and both coming from senior running back Clayton Smith.

Smith's first touchdown came on a 1-yard run to push the score up 21-0 and capped off a 10-play drive that covered 67-yards and took 6:54 off the clock. Smith's next score came 2:13 later.

Smith took a hand off and was practically untouched on a 20-yard run to give the Jays a 28-0 lead at the break.

The Jays would put together one scoring drive in the second half on a 7-play drive covering 46-yards and was topped by the best quarterback-receiver combination in the state of Oklahoma. Callins - Foster.

Callins found Foster in stride for a 25-yard score to finalize the score at 35. Foster's two touchdowns were impressive, but his most impressive catch perhaps came when he brought in a catch with four Antler's surrounding him in the second half. Of course, six catches for 175-yards may be more impressive that he had on the Antlers.

Callins, who threw for 211-yards by the half and finished with 253-yards on 15 of 20 passing, has now gone over 2,000-yards passing this season and with three passing scores against the Antlers pushes his Class 5A leading passing scores to 29 on the season. Callins also leads Class 5A in passing yards.

Guthrie played their final game of the season at Jelsma Stadium and finish perfect at the "Rock" with a 7-0 record. The BlueJay Show now goes on the road to Tulsa where they do work with Class 5A's Tulsa Washington, next Saturday. T. Washington, who plays on an artificial tuff surface, only loss of the season came in Week 3 to Class 6A's Broken Arrow. The Hornets have impressive wins over Carl Albert (40-7), East Central (46-21), and Bixby (28-14).

Guthrie and T. Washington last played in the 2002 State Title game. Guthrie won 16-13 and claimed their first ever state championship in school hitory.
