Jays treat themselves with a win

By: Chris Evans

The original hand written Capitol Hill roster had 19-players listed and rumors had the Redskins coming to Jelsma Stadium with just 17-players. However, 15-players suited out and 14 finished the game Friday night.

With a continuous running clock in both halves, Guthrie struck early and often in a 44-0 rout on the final home game of the regular season. The game lasted just a 97-minutes and that including a 23-minute halftime.

Guthrie (8-1) really had no tricks on the evening, but the treats came often and the first one come on the second play from scrimmage.

Senior Clayton Smith took a hand-off and started off left tackle, but brought back to the center and scored on a 27-yard run. Smith, on the next possession, scored on a 21-yard play that gave the Jays a 14-0 lead with 2:46 to play in the opening quarter.

Capitol Hill (1-8) never did past midfield in the first half, had a snap go over the punter's head and the alert Redskin simply threw the ball out of the end zone for a safety to avoid a BlueJay touchdown to push the score to 16-0. But that would last just for seconds.

The Redskins kicked the ball off following the safety and kicked it right to senior Donte' Foster and Foster returned the kick 63-yards and made it look effortlessly as he hit pay dirt. Foster cruised into the end zone with the last 40-yards by himself to give the Jays a 23-0 lead.

Guthrie inserted many players in and out of the line-up throughout the entire night. Freshmen Luke Davis, who has seen quality time in the last few weeks, scored his first varsity touchdown when he picked off the Redskins pass. Davis dodge Redskins to score from 40-yards out and the lead had grown to 30-0.

Davis, on the next possession, again picked off another pass and would lead to a Keaton Callins 6-yard touchdown run to finalize the first half scoring at 37-0. Davis earned the Huddle House Player of the Game with his two interceptions and touchdown.

Capitol Hill could manage just 2-yards of offense in the first half while the Jays just had 111-yards of offense with just 21-yards in the air.

In the second half, Guthrie used two different quarterbacks with junior Christian Lamb and freshmen Haden Seifert. The Jays also used multiple running backs with sophomores Derrick Kelly and Dennis Murphy, juniors J.P. Bruner, Ben Schwartz, and Kolt Rinehart along with Smith.

Schwartz scored the only second half touchdown with his first of the season from 10-yards out.

The Jays defense also saw many new faces and continued to hold the Redskins to just 12 total yards on the evening. The Jays finished with 194-yards of offense with 167-rushing.

Guthrie now shifts their focus to the Noble Bears as the Jays travel South for Noble's Senior Night. Noble dropped a hard fought game on Shawnee's Senior Night at Jim Thorpe Stadium 28-21. Noble is 4-5 overall and 2-4 in 5A-2 and will not make the play-offs.
