For a Guthrie and Booker T. Washington athletic event going down to the final moments would be safe to expect. And Saturday, did not disappoint.
Top ranked Washington advanced to the state semi finals with a 34-27, triple overtime, victory over the third ranked Guthrie BlueJays on S.E. Williams Stadium, in Tulsa. Washington's last overtime game was in 2006 and defeated Jenks 43-37 in triple overtime as well.
On fourth down and one, Guthrie quarterback Keaton Callins was held just short of the goal line when trying to push the game to a fourth overtime. With the final signal, Washington fans stormed the field in celebration. Washington advances to the semi's against El Reno, who defeated Miami.
Washington's first lead did not come until the first overtime (20-13) when Guthrie won the toss and elected to play defense first. However, the Jays thought they had won the game in regulation.
Junior Hank Hudson's 32-yard field goal was ruled no good near the left upright with :02. With three different camera angle's there is no sufficient evidence if it was good, or not. The entire football must go through the goal posts. Hudson finished with 9-points with two field goals of 23 and 21-yards and his counterpart Dylan Seibert scored 10-points and field goals of 28 and 34-yards.
Hudson's field goal attempt was set-up by the Jays special teams when the Hornets were attempting a go ahead field goal of their own, but Jays freshmen Landry Chappell blocked the attempt and cousin Jaden Chappell picked the ball up and dashed down the field.
Guthrie dominated the Hornets offensively with 378 total yards to 225-yards. However, the Jays fumbled four times and lost three of them.
Both quarterbacks shined in the game with Washington's junior signal caller, Eric Bennett, running for three touchdowns (all in overtime) and passing for one. Bennett carried the ball six times of the eight plays in overtime for the Hornets. Meanwhile, Callins finished with one rushing and two passing scores and piled up 199 passing yards.
Sophomore Kentrell Brothers added two scores from 20 and 4-yards.
Guthrie finishes the season with a 10-2 record and the 2008 Senior class finishes with the most wins ever by a Guthrie class by finishing with a 34-5 campaign. They eclipse last years 2007 class record of 33-6.
