Foster propels Jays over Ardmore

By: Chris Evans

Many people that have been around the Guthrie scene have seen some tremendous athletes come through these city limits, but they all may be watching the best ever in senior Donte' Foster. Foster and the Jays traveled to Ardmore, Friday night, and picked up their 19 straight victory with a 34-0 shut-out over the 7th ranked Ardmore Tigers.

Guthrie jumped out to a 21-0 halftime score and Foster accounted for two of the scores and played a big part in the third score. Top-ranked Guthrie improves to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in 5A-2. Meanwhile, Ardmore suffers their first loss of the season and falls to 4-1, 1-1.

Foster, defending two-time high jump state champ, finished the game with 5-catches for 146-yards and three scores and was named the Huddle House Player of the Game. The award is his second in three weeks. Foster now has seven receiving touchdowns and two rushing scores midway through the regular season. In his junior campaign he finished with 11-scores.

The first score came on a 38-yard pass from quarterback Keaton Callins to put the Jays up 7-0 in the first quarter. The duo would connect, again, this time in the second quarter.

Foster, who helped lead the Jays to their fifth state basketball title last season, made a great catch and ran in the final 20-yards on a 45-yard touchdown pass and the Jays led 14-0.

Callins would give Guthrie their final score of the first half with a 1-yard run that was set-up with a 24-yard pass reception from Foster. The catch gave the Jays a first and goal from the 4-yard line and it would take two plays for Callins to find the end zone before the half.

The Ardmore offense at times was able to move the ball against the Jays defense, but would stall and the Tigers were shut down on a couple of fourth down attempts.

Linebacker William Bohannon was suited out, but did not play due to an injury and a trio filled in for the senior.

Juniors Brady Blanchard and Blake Pruitt along with freshmen Landry Chappell filled in nicely at the weak side linebacker. Ardmore's most successful running play was run plays up the middle. Guthrie was able to get to quarterback Reed Downing early and often and senior Skyler Smith had back-to-back sacks on third down plays, in which, resulted in Tiger punts.

After the second Smith sack, Downing, in disgust slammed the ball into the turf and was called for an unsportsmanlike penalty and would be one of numerous unsportsmanlike penalties against the Tigers. Ardmore finished with a total of 11 penalties for 112-yards.

Ardmore finished the night with 196-yards of total offense, but was held in check in the second half with less then 70-yards of offense.

Foster would find the end zone one last time and this time coming from 29-yards out to pull the Jays ahead 28-0 with seconds remaining in the third quarter. The score came on a fourth down and 15 play and was a highlight catch as Foster went over the top of two would be defenders.

Senior Josh King added a 6-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the scoring.

The Jays remained balance offensively with 138-yards rushing and 186-yards through the air and collected 19 first downs.

The Guthrie defense registers their second shut out on the season and remains the top defense in 5A statistically. The Jays are allowing 5-points a game and will direct their attention to the Harrah Panthers. Harrah defeated Capitol Hill 52-12 to improve to 2-3 on the year and 1-1 in district play.
