These aren't your ordinary BlueJay teams

By: Chris Evans

As one the most famous 70's TV shows always said, "Welcome Back, Welcome Back, Welcome Back." Indeed Guthrie alumni welcome back and welcome to winning Guthrie BlueJay Football.

Go ahead read it again, winning BlueJay Football.

The 2008 season marks the 106th season of Guthrie football and this years 'Jays are on the way of making it just the 45th winning overall season. However, these are the brightest days of the schools history and unless you have been under a "rock" then you know Guthrie is turning into one of those teams everyone is either scared to play, or can't wait to play.

Now with two state championships on the board (2002 and 2007), BlueJay fans are becoming quite picky in how they win their games. Somewhat reminds you have some Sooner fans getting upset cause someone scored on the defense, or how they only won by 21-points when they were a 38-point favorite. My, on my, how the days have changed.

During the 1990's, Guthrie compiled a 36 and 71 win-loss record and in the '80's a 52-57 record. Thus far in the 2000's, the Jays are a combined 72 and 23.

Stop. Rewind. 72 and 23! That comes out to a winning percentage of .75789 and as I learned, with my Guthrie education, I will round that total up to 76%.

There are plenty of Guthrie alum's that go back even further then I do with the 1970's Guthrie teams that went 47-59-1 and in the 1960's who went 41 and 57. Of course, wins and loses are not the only thing a team can take out of a season, but they sure do help.

So, on Homecoming 2008 week, I like to welcome everyone back to G-Town and be sure to enjoy the game, win or lose. You never know what you have until it is gone.

Oh wait, one more thing. That #1 thing beside the Guthrie football team is their ranking and that 17-game winning streak is how many games they have won in a row. Yes, it is the state's longest winning streak in the larger school's.
