Play-off picture is as easy as 1, 2, 4

By: Chris Evans

District 5A-2 did its job this season by saving some of our brain cells. The same can not be said for 5A-1.

With Week 10 on the horizon, Carl Albert has secured the top spot, Guthrie the second spot, and Shawnee the third spot. Ardmore travels to Durant this week and the winner of that game will finish fourth and get the last play-off spot and the loser moves on to basketball and wrestling.

Who they will play is not so easy, but I have broken it down to try and make some sense of it. Remember, if there is a 3 or 4-way tie then the tie breaker will be decided with district points. A team can earn no more or no less then 15-points a game. When two teams share the same record the winner is determine by heads-up play. Both El Reno and Deer Creek are in the play-offs thanks to their current district points.

Key Games for Week 10:

El Reno at Duncan         Lawton Mac at Deer Creek        Altus at Chickasha

Scenario 1: El Reno loss, Lawton Mac win, and an Altus win creates a 5-way tie with records of 5-2. District points would determine the finish.

Scenario 2: El Reno loss, Deer Creek win, and an Altus win would create a 4-way tie (El Reno, Deer Creek, Altus, Duncan) and Lawton Mac out of the play-offs.

Scenario 3: El Reno win, Lawton Mac win, and an Altus win would have El Reno 1st, a 3-way tie (Deer Creek, Mac, Altus) and Duncan out of the play-offs.

Scenario 4: El Reno win, Deer Creek win, and an Altus win would have El Reno 1st, Deer Creek 2nd, Altus 3rd, Duncan 4th, and Lawton Mac out.

See this is real easy?

Scenario 5: El Reno loss, Mac win, and an Altus loss creates a 4-way tie (El Reno, Mac, Deer Creek, Duncan), and Altus out.

Scenario 6: El Reno loss, Deer Creek win, and an Altus loss creates a 3-way tie El Reno, Deer Creek, Duncan), Lawton Mac 4th, and Altus out

Scenario 7: El Reno win, Mac win, and an Altus loss would have El Reno 1st, Mac 2nd, Deer Creek 3rd, Altus 4th, and Duncan out.

Scenario 8: El Reno win, Deer Creek win, and an Altus loss would have El Reno 1st, Deer Creek 2nd, and a 3-way tie (Mac, Duncan, Altus).

El Reno can finish anywhere from 1st or 2nd

Deer Creek can finish anywhere from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th

Lawton Mac can finish anywhere from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or out of the play-offs

Duncan can finish 3rd, 4th, or out of the play-offs

Altus can finish 3rd, 4th, or out of the play-offs

Chris Evans Predictions, again!

Duncan defeats El Reno, Mac wins at Deer Creek, and Altus takes care of Chickasha. In that situation that would take us to Scenario 5. Great that helps! The one certain would be that the Altus Bulldogs would be out of the play-offs. With El Reno, Mac, Deer Creek, and Duncan all at 5-2 records it comes down to district points. Got 10 more minutes?

Perhaps, it would have been easier to go with Scenario 7 and be done. Ooo, interesting match-up if that is the case at Jelsma Stadium. Guthrie and Deer Creek?
