The 2002 Guthrie-Ardmore, first round play-off game, saw second year Guthrie head coach Rafe Watkins get his first play-off victory as the Bluejay coach. The ���Jays got a 29-12 win over the Tigers and would eventually win their next three games to win the school’s first ever state championship.
The 2002 game featured the sixth ranked Bluejays and tenth ranked Tigers. Ardmore head coach Mike Loyd knew the two weapons the Bluejays possessed with quarterback Demarko Jones and wide receiver Keenan Webb.
Loyd’s defensive game plan worked well on Webb, as the Tiger’s held him to just two catches for 17 yards, and held Jones to 55 first half yards. However, Guthrie went into the half trailing 12-9 knowing they had played a tough half of football.
Jones gave the ���Jays a 6-0 lead with a 10-yard run on the first Bluejay possession of the night. However, Ardmore scored 12 points in the second quarter while Guthrie got a 28-yard field goal from Stephen Penrod.
Roy Roberts, now playing for the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes, had a 2-yard run and Jarrett Higgs hooked up with Mitchell Ingram for a 25-yard pass for Ardmore’s two scores of the half.
Penrod added his second of three field goals for the lone score in the third quarter. Penrod’s kick was good from 22-yards out to tie the game at 12-12.
The fourth quarter was dominated by the Bluejays. Guthrie put 17 points on the board thanks in part to Jones’s 14-yard touchdown run with 3:36 left. Penrod added a 23-yard field goal to take the initial lead 15-12.
Russell Rush scored from 7-yards to make it 22-12 with 5:42 left to play in the game before Jones’s game ending score.
Jones finished the game with 180 yards rushing and an impressive 125 yards coming in the second half.
