The high school basketball regular season is coming down the home stretch of the regular season and to no surprise the Suburban Conference proves to be one of the best in the state on the boys side.

Last season Guthrie, Shawnee, Carl Albert, and El Reno boys represented the west in the state tournament and this season the conference may end up with four again. However, it's the east that has dominated the 5A polls this season.

Carl Albert appears to be the South's only hope while the North will depend upon Western Heights, El Reno, and Guthrie to play in the middle of March. Ardmore, Capitol Hill, and Northwest Classen will try and play spoilers.

The north has dominated the south this season in conference play with an 11-2 advantage as most teams have played at least seven of 13 conference games. The Titans took down Piedmont and Harrah got by Deer Creek for the South's two lonely wins. Carl Albert is the only south team with a winning record inside the conference at 5-2.

Western Heights (13-4) leads the charge with an 8-0 record and are a lock to host a 5A regional. The Jets have flown in out of nowhere as evident of there 11 and 36 record in the two previous seasons. The Jets have two wins over Guthrie and wins over Carl Albert and El Reno. Three of their four losses have come from 6A's schools, and have yet to lose to a 5A school.

The Jets have had some luck on their side this season with three game winning shots at the buzzer, but they have created their own luck as well. Go ahead and send the conference coach of the year plaque to Tyrone Nash.

Nash and the Jets appear they will face Carl Albert in the conference championship on Super Saturday. Meanwhile, Guthrie and El Reno are not only fighting for the second and third spot in the North, but perhaps locks up hosting a regional. An El Reno win all but certain guarantees them a home regional.

This is the final week (February 6th) of the season where the overall records will be factored into making up the regionals.

El Reno (11-5) struck first with a 52-44 win over the Jays, in Guthrie. The two meet again, Tuesday evening, in Canadian County with the two time defending 5A champs needing the win more so then the Indians. You can listen to the game on 105.1 FM or on Guthrie Sports Page Radio.
