The two-time defending 5A state champions, Guthrie BlueJays, opened the season
inside the Shawnee High School Performing Arts and Athletic Center and walked
away with a 62-36 win over the Class 6A Shawnee Wolves.
Guthrie (1-0) got a boost from junior Kentrell Brothers, who finished with a
game high 13-points, and the Jays intense defensive pressure by holding the
Wolves to just 10 made shots from the field. Shawnee falls to 0-5 to begin the
season.
The BlueJays defeated Shawnee twice last season including in the first round of
the state tournament (55-38) and at Shawnee (75-52). In the win a year ago, in
Shawnee, Brothers had 19-points in the win.
Guthrie took a 29-16 halftime lead, but exploded in the second half with a 22-3
run to seal the deal as the Wolves were unable to make a field goal in the third
quarter. The Wolves moved up to Class 6A this season and are inexperience this
season with graduation a season ago.
Chauncey Dumas finished in double figures with 10 points while his brother
Chelsey Dumas finished with nine.
Guthrie hits the road in conference play again this Friday when they travel to
Oklahoma City Western Heights, who are 5-1 and got a 50-47 win, on the road,
over Carl Albert Tuesday evening.
