Guthrie, Okla. -- It was all but almost over for the Guthrie BlueJay basketball team trailing the Northwest Classen Knights by 11 points with 2:42 left in the game.

However, Kentrell Brothers running shot in the paint with :11 left erased the large deficit and gave the Jays the eventual game winning shot.

"In my seven years here I don't recall a team coming back from that type of adverstiy," Guthrie head coach Pete Papahronis said in his post game radio interview. To hear the complete interview click here.

Brothers finished with a game high 25 points, including 14 of the team's 19 fourth quarter points and 9 of the last 14 points, and was named as the Farmers & Merchants Player of the game. Click here to listen to his post game interview.

Guthrie wins the regional championship and will play the El Reno Indians in the Area Finals for a trip to the state tournament. The game will be Friday evening, 6:30, at Harrah High School. You can read a brief write up about the game by clicking here.

The Jays jumped out to a 9-8 first quarter lead and a 24-22 halftime advantage despite a Paco Jones shot with :03 before the end of the half.

In that second quarter, Guthrie had their biggest lead of the night at seven, 22-15, before the Knights closed out the quarter with a 7-2 run.

The Knights regained the lead 1:15 into the third quarter with two buckets and Jays head coach Pete Papahronis needed a time out.

Brothers tied the game at 26-all and the game would be tied at 33-33 with 2:27 left in the third. From that point, the Knights finished on a 8-2 to take a 41-35 into the final quarter.

Jones 3-point shot gave the Knights a 51-40 advantage with 2:42 left to play and that's where the Jays made their come back.

Tim Zupo's bucket and Brothers conventional 3-point play in the next 1:10 pulled the Jays within six, 51-45, with 1:32 to play. The Knights stand-out sophomore point guard Jameel Donovan missed a front end of the one-and-one and 9 seconds later Brothers hit another field goal to make it a 51-47 game with 1:13 left.

Donovan was back at the free throw line and made one of two to give the Knights a five point lead, 52-47, with 1:01 remaining.

Brothers, once again, responded with a made field goal with :48 to make it a 52-49 game. Northwest Classen's forward Patrick Gibbs was fouled and sent to the line, where he connected on one of two free throws to give the Knights a 53-49 lead with :41 on the clock.

Senior forward Devon Hall seven seconds later connected on both of his crucial free throws to pull his team within two, 53-51, with :34 left and just 13 seconds later sophomore Codee Gross missed his first free throw, but hit his second to pull within one, 53-52, with :21 left in regulation.

The Jays were quick to foul and the Knights missed both free throws and with a B.J. McDoald rebound and an outlet pass to Brothers, the junior play maker went the length of the floor for the game winning shot.

Despite the first lead for Guthrie since early in the third quarter, the Knights have 10 seconds to play with. Donovan took the ball the length of the floor and took the shot from five feet away, but missed and Hall corralled the rebound to secure the regional championship for the Jays.
