Guthrie, Okla. -- In a night where
Guthrie couldn’t hit the long ball, it hurt them deeply. Guthrie
was 0-8 from three point range. Essentially that was one of tthe
difference’s in the ball game, as El Reno was able to capitalize
down the stretch for the 52-44 win inside the Guthrie High
School gymnasium.
The eighth ranked Jays drop to 6-4, 1-2 in
conference play, and seventh ranked El Reno improves to 7-3.
Guthrie led by as many as five as El Reno
never seemed to let Guthrie get a hold on the game, and was able
to control the tempo late. Devante Moore for El Reno led all
scorers with 20 points.
First quarter, Travis Johnson hit the first
five points for El Reno. Big offensive rebounding by Devon Hall
and B.J. McDonald allowed Guthrie to capitalize and stay in the
ball game. Hall had five rebounds in the first quarter,
accounting for five points. McDonald and Hall combined for 9 of
the eleven first quarter points.
El Reno had a slight advantage as Moore hit a
running shot at the buzzer to get the Indians the 12-11 lead at
the end of the first quarter.
Second quarter saw Guthrie push the lead to
19-18 before Moore and the Indians started making their run. El
Reno closed the half on a 5-0 run in the final 5:02 to lead at
the break 23-19.
Senior Chaunsey Dumas was a shot blocking
machine in the first half, knocking three out of the field of
play, including a monster block that ended up in the fifth row.
Third quarter saw the Blue Jays start a 4-0
run to tie the game. Moore and Mustain helped corral the offense
for El Reno and kept it tight. Fighting back though, as El Reno
regained the lead 33-31 with 1:30 left, McDonald was doubled
down low; found Murillo who fed it back to McDonald for the easy
duce to tie the game up at 33 apiece. Guthrie scored to
take a 35-33 lead at the end of the third quarter, it led to the
13th different lead change of the night.
However, the 14th lead change
proved to the difference and the last when Moore got a steal and
took it for the layup and lead, 37-35, with seven minutes
remaining. After a made El Reno basket, Brothers would get
to the free throw line, and hit one of two. That cut the El Reno
lead to 39-36.
Chris Mustain, who scored 11 points alone in
the final quarter, was able to hit a running
basket, putting the Indians up five. Brothers would come back;
hit a jumper to cut it to three points with five minutes to go
in the ball game. Mustain scored six in a row before Guthrie was
able to score to cut it to five at 45-40 with 2:30 remaining.
A key play happened after getting an El Reno
stop. El Reno got the ball on a turnover and was able to score
on the next basket, pushing the score to 47-40.
Gross was called for a foul on the next
possession sending Johnson to the free throw line. Johnson
sinked both free throws. With 2:07 remaining, Guthrie went into
desperation mode.
In the final minutes, Guthrie made a late run
down 10 scoring four quick points cutting it to 50-44 with 54.9
seconds remaining. After Mustain missed a shot, Tim
Zupo was given a chance to cut it to four, but missed the shot,
allowing El Reno to run the ball down the court quickly and
setting up the free throws to ice the ball game.
El Reno outscored Guthrie in the fourth
quarter 19-9. At one point during the game, El Reno had an
11-3 quarter advantage on the Blue jays.
Guthrie was just gigantic on the glass
tonight, outrebounding El Reno 38-18. However, those boards
didn’t always result in made baskets.
