El Reno, Okla. -- The
Guthrie and El Reno boys basketball game, Tuesday night, had no
reflections for post season play, but the Jays had something to
play for on the Indians Homecoming night.
The Jays drew even with El Reno on the
season with a 48-27 after El Reno spoiled Guthrie's home opener
in early January.
El Reno was without the services of one of their top players in
Devante Moore.
Guthrie improves to 13-6 and El Reno falls to 13-6. The Jays have now won three
games in a row have won seven of their last 9.
It is expected to be announced that Guthrie will receive the No. 2 overall seed
from the West and El Reno a three or four seed. The official announcement will
be released tomorrow.
El Reno managed just 9 points in the entire second half and did not hit their
first field goal until the 5:11 mark in the fourth quarter on a Travis Johnson
bucket. The Jays outscored the Indians 24-9 in the second half after going into
the halftime locker room leading 24-18.
Leading the charge for the Jays was senior forward Devon Hall with 18 points and
16 rebounds and was named the Farmers and Merchants Bank Player of the Game.
Hall and the Jays had the size advantage down low and out rebounded El Reno 41
to 13.
El Reno jumped out to a 6-2 lead before the Jays tied the game at six with a
Kentrell Brothers free throw. Guthrie took their first lead at the 1:39 mark of
the first quarter and never relinquished that lead. An 8-0 run in a 2:00 span
doubled up El Reno 16-8 a minute into the second quarter.
Johnson began the third quarter with two made free throws, but proved to be
their only third quarters points and the Jays rolled off a 15-0 run in the next
9:21. El Reno finished the third quarter 0 for 11 from the field.
