It was not the prettiest win of the year, but it was the biggest win of the year. The now 23-2 Guthrie BlueJays used an 18-7 third quarter spurt to pull away from the Southeast Spartans to claim the regional championship inside the Guthrie High School gymnasium, 57-39.
Guthrie advances to the Area finals
with a date with the El Reno Indians. The Jays are 2-0 this season against the
Indians, including a 67-47 win last Monday, in El Reno.
The BlueJays could just manage seven first quarter points, Saturday evening, and with a Spartan 3-pointer at the buzzer Southeast held an 8-7 lead at the end of the opening quarter. Guthrie would then outscore Southeast 13-12 in the second quarter to go into the locker room tied at 20-all.
The first half witness 12 lead changes with seven of those coming in the second quarter, but B.J. McDonald's opening shot in the third quarter gave the Jays the lead for good. McDonald's shot would also start a 7-0 run for the Jays in the first 2:04 out of the locker room.
Southeast scored the next two field goals to get within three, 27-24, but then Jays hit an 8-0 run in a 1:54 span to push the lead into double digits, 35-24. Guthrie lead 38-27 through three quarters and outscored Southeast
19-12 in the final quarter.
Guthrie finishes the season with a 7-1 home record with wins over Harrah, Deer Creek, El Reno, Piedmont, Western Heights, Noble (twice), and Southeast.
