On paper, it is amazing the Noble Bears even made the trip to Guthrie. However, Noble proved to be worthy of the trip by playing with the top ranked Jays for 20 minutes on Senior Night.
The Jays coming off an emotional conference championship win, on Saturday, against rival Carl Albert was in a bear fight, Tuesday night, with the 16 seeded Noble team. Guthrie, in the end, came away with a 64-44 win after pulling away midway through the third quarter. The Jays improved to 19-2 and becomes the first team in 5A to win 19-games. Noble falls to 4-17 on the season and their two game winning streak snapped.
Both teams will hook up again, next Thursday evening, for the first round of regional play at Guthrie High School. The Jays are the top seeded team in the West. Southeast and Lawton Mac will play prior to the Jays and Bears at 6:30.
Noble, as expected, used multiple zone defense's against the Jays and played it well. The Jays built a lead of 15-7 in the first quarter, but Noble would then go on an 11-2 run and took the lead, 18-17, with 5:09 to play before the half.
The Jays outscored the Bears the remainder of the half to go into the half 25-20.
Noble's Will Starr hit a trey to begin the third quarter to pull his team within two, but the Jays went on an 18-7 run to finish the quarter up 43-30. The game was secured in the fourth quarter as the Jays open the fourth quarter with another big run.
The five BlueJay seniors: Donte' Foster, Keaton Callins, Matt Hamilton, Clayton Smith, and William Bohannon were awarded the A-Always Storage Players of the Game.
Foster finished with a game high 17 points and was followed closely by Callins' 16. As a team, the Jays shot 45% from the field that included 3 of 10 from three point land.
Guthrie travels to Shawnee Friday evening for another conference game and can be heard on 105.1 FM and on Guthrie Sports Page.
