Jays defending the Ardmore Holiday TournamentBy: Staff Reports Day 3
The Guthrie BlueJays have now won back-to-back Ardmore Holiday Tournament's with a 50-47 win over the second ranked Ardmore Tigers. Keaton Callins was named tournament Most Valuable Player and teammates Donte' Foster and Devon Hall were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The top ranked Jays took advantage of the free throw line down the stretch by making all six of their charity throw's in a game of unbeatens. By doing so, Guthrie improves to 6-0 on the year and extend their winning streak to 14 games. Ardmore drops their first loss of the year and falls to 7-1.
Ardmore jumped out to an 8-1 lead before the Jays outscored the Tigers, 6-3, the rest of the way of the first period and trailed, 11-7, at the end of one.
Callins, Jays leading scorer on the year, took advantage of the Tigers zone defense by finishing with a team high 15 points. The Tigers were forced to go to the zone defense when their defensive stopper, Jarrett Brandon, was called for two quick fouls.
Both teams would warm up in the third quarter after the Jays had a 20-17 advantage at the break. Tiger's Trey Cohee hit a three to tie the game at 20-20, but the Jays would go on a 15-9 run to finish out the third quarter.
Guthrie and Ardmore have now played four times over the past two seasons and will have a couple of more chances to play again in either the Carl Albert Tournament, or State Tournament. Perhaps, both?
Day 2
The Guthrie BlueJays got a scared from 6A's 12th ranked Putnam City West Patriots, but pulled out a 46-44 overtime win to play in the finals of the Ardmore Holiday Tournament. The Jays will play the host team, Ardmore, Wednesday, 3:30 for the tournament championship.
The Jays won the Holiday Tournament last season that included one of the three wins over Ardmore (66-58) last year. The last win over the Tigers came, in Guthrie, at regionals where the Jays won 66-52. Today's marquee match-up will be Class 5A's No.1 vs No. 2 teams. Day 1
The top ranked Guthrie BlueJays made quick work of the Jaguars of Westmoore High School in a first round game of the Ardmore Holiday Tournament with a final score of 48-29.
The Jays improve their season record to 4-0 and extend their winning streak to 12 games and will face perhaps their biggest challenge of the young season when they play Putnam City West today, at 5:40, inside the Ardmore High School gymnasium. Westmoore falls to 0-5 and have not scored more then 38 points in a game this season.
Guthrie had their lowest scoring output of the year, but held the Jags to just two first half points in the offensive nightmarish game. The Jays outscored the Jags 12-11 in the third quarter before each team added 16 points in the final period. Guthrie now averages 60 points a contest and allow just 40.
Putnam City West (4-2), ranked number 11 in Class 6A, advanced to the winners side of the bracket in the tournament with a 43-42 win over 12th ranked Del City. The Patriots outscored Del City 16-8 in the fourth quarter after trailing by seven at the start of the quarter.
The Patriots lost in the finals of the Bartlesville Tournament to Ardmore earlier this season (54-52).
Class 5A's eighth ranked Southeast Spartans dropped a 68-56 contest to Allen Texas while 5A's second ranked team, Ardmore (7-0), had an easy time with Class B's Eagletown 75-29.
