Titans take fun out of rivalry

By: Chris Evans

Guthrie - Carl Albert! Enough said! However, Carl Albert took the fun out of Thursday night by controlling the entire game and taking down the Jays 62-48 in Midwest City.

The Titans, Class 5A's 10th ranked team, would take a 6-4 lead with 5:00 to play in the first quarter and would never look back. Carl Albert had an 18-11 advantage after the first quarter and a 36-21 half time lead.

In the second half, Guthrie would come within 12 points a few times, but could not get the deficit into single digits. Guthrie finished the game by shooting 16 three point shots and not making a single attempt. Overall, the Jays shot 36% while the Titans shot 54% with a lot of shots coming within 5 feet of the basket.

Guthrie, ranked 6th, now drops their season record to 15-3 overall and now have lost twice in their last three games. Carl Albert improved their record to 13-6.

Donte Foster, Guthrie's leading scorer, picked up his third personal foul at the 4:17 mark in the second quarter and would see very little time in the third quarter and finished the game with just six points.

Guthrie would only manage one player to score in double digits in senior Kent McDonald who finished with 10 points. Senior Jon Washington added 9 points.

The radio crew awarded sophomore Devon Hall as the player of the game by scoring 9 points. Hall was perfect from the field (3-3) and from the free throw line (3-3) while playing tremendous defense and taking multiple charges. Hall has seen increased minutes as the season has progressed.

Keaton Callins continues to have tough luck on his three point shot with multiple shots, that seemed halfway down before rattling out, finished with seven points.

Guthrie will now play Harrah for the Suburban Conference championship, Saturday night, at Western Heights High School. Tip time is set for 7:00 and will be the second meeting between the two schools.

Harrah got by Guthrie, 65-55, although the score does not show actually how close the game was. These two teams could see each other one more time in the play-offs if both teams were to win their regionals.

All remaining games for Guthrie can be heard on Triple Play Sports 105.1 FM.
