Guthrie sweeps Stillwater on the hardwood

By: Chris Evans

The Guthrie Bluejays finally got on the court for a basketball game and the Lady Jays continue to pile up the wins in the early part of the season with wins over Stillwater High School inside SHS Fieldhouse.

The Bluejays won 71-64 in their first game of the year after the first two scheduled games were cancelled. Guthrie is 1-0 on the season while Stillwater drops to 2-2.

Some would appeared the 'Jays were in post season form with their clutch shooting from the free throw line by going 25 0f 30 from the charity stripe.

Pioneer guard Jamell Cormier had a game high 30 points, including 16 in the first eight minutes, while demanding different Bluejays to try and cover up the talented force.

Stillwater head coach Michael Davis had high remarks toward the Bluejays with an interview with the Stillwater News Press after the game.

“You have to give (Guthrie) credit, they hit foul shots and they rebounded the basketball. That’s an athletic team and we battled until the end," Davis said

Despite trailing by four at the half, junior guard Keaton Callins led Guthrie with nine third quarter points to take a 46-41 lead going into the final period. Callins finished with 17 points.

Junior stand-out Donte' Foster led the team with 20 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Senior post Kent McDonald added 11 points and freshmen Kentrell Brothers poured in 10 points in his varsity debut.
Guthrie, ranked No.4 in the state, will now prepare for the Ardmore Tournament which will be December 27th, 28th, and 29th.

Guthrie 53, Stillwater 49

The Lady Jays won 53-49 over the Lady Pioneers and it was the Jessica Dwyer show in the first half, and the Bianca Smith and Brittney Berryman show in the fourth quarter.

Dwyer finished the game with 17 points, but had 15 in the first half to help lead the Lady Jays to a 29-20 half time lead.

Guthrie improves to 3-1 on the season while Stillwater now drops to 0-4.

Smith would hit a couple of three-point bombs and Berryman would had two icing free throws to secure the win in the final period after trailing 40-39 going into the fourth quarter.

Berryman finished with 12 points and Smith was the other Lady Jay to score in double figures with 10.

It was apparent Stillwater wanting to shut down senior guard Emily Davis and did a nice job by holding the sharp shooter to six points.

“We got (Emily Davis) into some foul trouble and we were able to take them out of some of the things they wanted to do,” Lady Pioneer coach Carl Treat told the Stillwater News Press after the game.

The 14th ranked Lady Jays will not play until January when both teams travel to Piedmont.
