Guthrie, Okla. -- The Guthrie BlueJay baseball team could not have had asked for a better season opener, Tuesday evening, at Squires Field. Okay, perhaps a few more degree's on the temperature gauge may have been nice, but the Jays bats were hot as the camp fire outside their dugout.

The Jays erupted for seven runs in both the third and fourth innings and got a pitching gem from senior Corbin Crockett as the Jays took down Piedmont 15-2.

Guthrie (1-0) turns around today and plays the Wildcats, in Piedmont, with a 4:00 start. The game was originally set for Monday, but was pushed back due to the weather.

Zac Bobo led the way at the plate by going 3-for-3, including two doubles, and add three RBIs. Senior Dustin Bowman added two hits, two runs scored, and a RBI.

The 6-7-8-9 Guthrie hitters were a combined 7-11 and were able to turn the line-up twice in the third and fourth innings for head coach Jon Chappell.

Senior John Cotton, who hit 14 big flies a season ago, just missed his first this season. Cotton's shot to left center hit the top of the wall for his first RBI double this season.

Crockett pitched five full innings and allowed two runs in the third, but gave up just three hits and allowed one hit bats men.

Guthrie looks to compete near the top of the Suburban Conference this season. Its expected the Jays will be tested at the top with Deer Creek in the North along with Carl Albert, Chickasha, and Shawnee in the South.

The Jays will play at McGuinness Thursday and do not return to the friendly confines until March 23rd when they host Western Heights. To view the complete varsity and junior varsity schedule click here
