By Chris Evans

Posted May 1, 2009

With regionals already lined up and ready to go next week, Guthrie BlueJay baseball is closing out the regular season and swept a doubleheader over Classen, Thursday afternoon.

The Jays, who are currently ranked No. 17 in the latest 5A poll, delivered a 17-4 and 15-0 blowout over the visitors. T.J. Bross got the win in game one and Zach Bobo collected the other win in game two.

Guthrie has now won 13 of their last 16 games and will play at Carl Albert beginning on Tuesday for regionals. The Jays will play Southeast in the second game of the afternoon.

In game one, Classen jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Jays could grab a bat, but when they did they went to work.

The first five batters all scored and the Jays took a 5-2 lead after one. John Cotton brought in two runs with his double and Hayden Seiftert brought in the other three runs with his triple.

Guthrie got back in the scoring mood in the next inning with a Landry Chappell single to bring home Siefert and was followed up by Clayton Lawson's single to bring home Chappell to push the score up 7-2.

Guthrie then put the game away in the home half of the third inning with 9 runs coming across and four runs on one swing.

Corbin Crockett drove the Classen pitch over the left field wall for the
grand slam and finished the game with 5 runs batted in.

Bross pitched all five innings and struck eight batters while walking three.

In game number two, Guthrie left off right were they did in game one, but this time taking the sail out of the winds in the first inning by plating 10 runs and it would be another big fly to left.

With the Jays already up 6-0 with just one out, John Cotton capped off the inning by sending the Classen pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam. The homer gave Cotton the round tripper and the Jays a 10-0 lead after one.

Guthrie was able to play their bench for the rest of the night from that point on. As a team, Guthrie pounded out 10 hits.

The Jays will next be in action tonight, weather permitting, with Class 6A's Edmond Memorial. The game will be broadcasted on 105.1 FM and streaming live on Guthrie Sports Page. The Dugout Show will begin at 6:30 with the first pitch being delivered at 7:00.
