BlueJays continue on a hot streak

By Staff Reports

Posted April  22, 2009

The Guthrie BlueJays had dropped five consecutive losses just a few weeks ago, but since then have responded with eight wins in their last nine games including a 9-7 victory over El Reno, Tuesday night, at Squires Field.

The BlueJays plated eight different Jays on seven hits as senior pitcher T.J. Bross got the win. Guthrie avenges the previous night's loss when the Indians scored six runs in their last at bat to win 13-12.

"I cant remember losing a ball game in that fashion," head coach Jon Chappell said about Monday's loss. "I have coached a lot of baseball games and I don't remember losing a ball game with that kind of run lead at the end of the ball game. Especially when we didn't do anything wrong," Chappell concluded.

On Tuesday, Bross pitched four innings before giving way to junior Corbin Crockett. El Reno took a quick 2-0 lead after the first inning with the first three Indian hitters hitting doubles and the fourth batter with an infield single off the lefty.

Guthrie gets back to the .500 mark with a 12-12 record. El Reno falls to 9-13 on the season. Each team may be in the Carl Albert regional which will be announced next week.

El Reno plated two more runs in the third on three hits to take a 4-0 lead. Guthrie batted their first hit of the game in the home half of the third with a single from Clayton Lawson and then got some help from the Indian defense.

Corbin Crockett hit an infield single, but then a throwing error allowed two Jays to score on the play as Crockett finished up at third and later scored on a sacrifice fly from John Cotton to bring the Jays within one, 4-3.

The Jays exploded in the fourth with six runs on six hits that was highlighted by 3-RBI triple by Crockett. Freshmen Hayden Seifert capped off the scoring with a RBI single to give the Jays a 9-4 lead as the Jays sent 11 batters to the plate.

Bross was unable to get out of the fifth frame as Crockett replaced him on the bump. The Indians scored three runs when freshmen outfielder Luke Davis thought he made the third out with a catch at the wall, but the ball fell to the ground and clearing the bases for the games final runs.

"I am extremely pleased the way we are playing, but we need to get healthy," Chappell said. "They are a fun bunch of kids to watch."

The Jays begin a busy stretch of the season beginning with the Deer Creek East/West Classic today through Saturday. Guthrie will open up the Classic with the Ada Cougars.

Guthrie will return to conference play next Monday when the play host to No. 1 Carl Albert, Monday. The game can be heard on Triple Play Sports Radio 105.1 FM and on Guthrie Sports Page.
