Baseball can be a funny game at times and there was
nothing funny in game one of two, at Squires Field, for the Junior Jays
team against rival Carl Albert. The Titans handed the Jays their worse loss of the season with a 14-0 five inning run-rule. However, the Jays returned back to form in game two as they dished out a 16-8 five inning run-rule of their own to split with the Titans. "I am not sure what team that was out there," head coach Casey Porter said of his ball club in game one. "We could not have played any worse." Guthrie improves to 23-4 on the season and 8-2 in conference play, that includes two tournament wins |
including their own and the Yukon Tournament. The Jays defeated 6A Norman North and Westmoore to reach the finals and then winning the championship game over Piedmont.
In game two, Guthrie struck for four runs in the first by getting RBI singles from Gates and Reed Roberts. Cody Reihs highlighted the inning by hitting a RBI double to score Gates.
Carl Albert responded with two runs in the second inning to cut the Jays lead in half, 4-2, but Guthrie countered that with 3-runs of their own in the bottom of the inning without collecting a single hit to make it a 7-2 game after two innings played.
Once again, Carl Albert put a crooked number on the score board by adding three more runs in the third, but once again the Jays bats responded.
Roberts lead off the inning with a single and then stole second base and was later brought in on a Beau Davis 2-RBI double. Not to be outdone Jacob Chappell delivered a 2-RBI triple to push the score up to 11-3.
Guthrie scratched one more run in the third by getting a sacrifice fly from Hunter Adams to make 12-5 after three complete.
The Jays would make it a 13-5 game in the fourth inning when Reihs hit his second double of the game and was driven in by a Titan error to set-up the run-rule score.
However, the Jays eventually had to earn the run-rule as the Titans put a 3 spot on the board, in the fifth inning, to pull within five, 13-8.
The Jays, in their last at bat, got RBI's from Tyler Porter and Niles Braket to help secure the run-rule.
Guthrie will next be in action tonight in El Reno before finishing the regular season at home vs McGuinness.
The play-off's will begin later this weekend at Piedmont and Deer Creek.
