Jays explode with 11 runs in win

By: Chris Evans

Senior, utility player J Hensley received 4-runs before he ever toed the rubber and would have plenty more run support in Guthrie's 11-4 win over 10th ranked Durant, on Saturday afternoon, at Squires Field in the Deer Creek Classic.

On a picture perfect day to play baseball, Guthrie scored 4-runs in the top of the first inning highlighted by a Sean Ellis 2-run homerun over the left-center field fence. Ashton Morgan, Corbin Crockett, and Jaden Chappell collected hits in the first frame as well. Justin Chappell grounded out for the first out of the game, but in the process brought in cousin Crockett.

The Jays (16-13) got three more runs in the 4th inning on two hits by John Cotton and Crockett, and took advantage of four base on balls, including two hit bats man, by Durant pitcher Collin Mullens.

Crockett picked up his third hit and third run batted in the 6th inning with a double to right field. Crockett finished by going 3-4 and multiple stolen bases, including home, in the 6th inning and was named player of the game.

The Jays collected two more runs in the top of the seventh for Hensley. Hensley went the distance on the mound and collected 12 strike-outs.

Guthrie, ranked No. 14 in Class 5A, will finish the regular season this week with top-ranked Chickasha, on Monday, and Carl Albert, on Tuesday, before returning home for the final two games against US Grant, on Thursday, and Edmond North, on Friday, at Squires.

Guthrie has learned they will be the No. 6 seeded team on the West side of the state and will travel to Carl Albert for regionals. The Jays will play Northwest Classen while Carl Albert plays Noble in double elimination. The winner of the four team regional will move on to the state tournament. Carl Albert is the No. 2 seeded team on the West.

The home games with US Grant and Edmond North will be broadcasted on Triple Play Sports 105.1 FM. The Dugout Show will begin at 6:15 with the first pitch set for 6:30.

Deer Creek Classic

With the win over Durant on Saturday, Guthrie finished the Deer Creek Tournament with a 2-2 record. No. 15 Booker T. Washington hit a walk off homerun against the Jays to win 6-4 in the first game of the tourney. In the second game, the Jays got an impressive win over 8th ranked Ada, 5-3, but dropped their next game to Miami, 7-4, despite only giving up two hits.
