TJ Bross did have much luck in the Ardmore tournament this past weekend, but Thursday night against, Class 6A's, Del City Eagles he sure did.
Bross would pitch a seven inning jewel and would receive 11-runs from his offense to secure the Jays sixth win of the season by taking down Del City 11-2 on a chilly night at Squires Field. Guthrie improves to 6-6 on the season and will have the weekend off before a busy upcoming week.
Del City jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead with a triple from Jeff Dawz, but an errant Guthrie relay throw sailed into the Eagles dugout to allow Dawz to score.
Guthrie's offense got going quickly with 3-runs in the first inning when Guthrie's first five batters got on base. Senior Ashton Morgan lead off with a single followed by a single to right field by sophomore Corbin Crockett. Sophomore Jayden Chappell would then draw a base-on-balls and the Bluejay catcher Sean Ellis would single to left field to score Crocket and Chappell.
Justin Chappell would follow Ellis with a single of his own to left field to score Elllis. The 3-runs off of 4-hits in the first inning would be enough run support for Bross and the Jays defense as Guthrie held a 3-1 lead at the end of the first inning.
Guthrie would erupt for four more runs in the third inning when they would spread out four hits and take advantage of two Del City errors. Crockett got things stirring with a 1-out double off the blue wall in left field and would score on another Ellis single. Sophomore John Cotton would scratch two runs for the Jays with a 2-RBI single up the middle. Guthrie took a 7-1 lead after three complete innings.
The Jays offense would push across one more run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Senior J Hensley and Cotton would each get a hit in the fifth inning, but Blake Calvert would get the RBI with a ground-out to the shortstop and Morgan's single scored Cotton.
Ellis lead the offensive charge by going 3-4 with four RBI's as well as scoring three times. Crockett finished 2-3, Morgan was 2-2, and Justin Chappell went 2-3 with two RBI's.
Bross, on the mound, would surrender just four hits while allowing three walks and two strike-outs in his seven innings of work. In fact, Bross would allow just seven base runners all night.
Bluejay head coach Jon Chappell told the radio crew in his post game interview that he believed this was perhaps the best over all game his club has put together this season and if they played like this their record perhaps would look a little different.
Guthrie will now travel to Harrah, on Monday, for a Suburban Conference match-up before participating in the Choctaw Tournament Wednesday through Saturday. Saturday's game in the Choctaw Tournament will be broadcasted on Triple Play Sports 105.1 FM.
