Junior Jays claim championship in Enid

By: Marcus Seifert

The Guthrie Junior Jays have been playing well to start off the Red Dirt summer baseball season with four wins in four outings, but walking into David Allen Memorial Ballpark, in Enid, they understood the challenge they had in front of them with the stack field.  However, Guthrie stepped up to the challenge, and delivered three wins in the rain shorten Memorial Day tournament to come away as tournament winners.

In the first game, Guthrie (7-0) drew the Edmond Sante Fe Wolves and Hayden Seifert got the call on the mound from head coach Casey Porter. Seifert would allow just five runs on eight hits, and had just enough run support highlighted by two RBI’s each from Landry Chappell and Hunter Adams to pull out a 6-5 victory.

On Sunday night, the Jays took on the hometown and tourney host Enid Plainsman. Chappell started the game allowing eight runs on just four hits, but was lifted after seven complete innings in an 8-8 ball game, but would still have a say in the out come of the game.

Chappell finished the game with three RBI’s, but none bigger then his RBI triple in the ninth to drive home Luke Davis to put the Jays in front for good. Seifert would then drive Chappell in to make the final score 10-8 after holding the Plainsmen scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

Davis had the defensive play of the tournament streaking in from centerfield to not only make the catch, but then having the presence to throw a runner out at home in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Bryan Dutton came in to pitch two scoreless innings to pick up the win.

On the final day of the tourney, Monday, Dutton pitched seven strong innings allowing only three runs on six hits in a, 9-3, win over Edmond North.

Dutton, as other Guthrie pitchers this season, got plenty of run support with RBI’s coming from Seifert, Chappell, John Clark and Evan Plagg.

The BlueJays return back to the diamond, on Tuesday, against the OKC Broncos at Squires Field starting at 6:00pm and then will turn around and host the Guthrie Tournament starting on Thursday and ending on Sunday.
